Early Christmas Shopping Ideas In Montreal

November 19, 2014
Santa Claus Parade, Indigo, Old Montreal

Beat the Holiday Rush

As the saying goes: the early bird gets the worm; so with Christmas just around the corner, now’s your chance to get in some early shopping. If you’re like me, you’d like to get a head start on whatever you can, especially any type of shopping. For those visiting Montreal, you’ll be happy to discover our numerous shopping options, if you haven’t done so already. Take a look through our article and discover some great ideas for early holiday shopping.

Local Holiday Flavour

Shopping in Montreal is a cultural experience and depending on your budget you’ll find everything from high-end to bargain basement deals. First of all, get your list made and check it once or twice before you head out on the town. If you’re here visiting and want to find some unique Montreal gifts for your dear ones be sure book a hotel suite downtown Montreal and poke around the area’s many shops and boutiques.

St. Catherine St. and Sherbrooke St

With major department stores like The Bay and plenty of mid-price range stores and boutiques, this is a great place to head from your downtown Montreal hotel suite to pick up unique gifts. This is one of Montreal’s most popular shopping areas for locals and tourists. Be aware there are many adult-oriented shops and clubs along this street, along with the swank Ogilvy department store, high-end jewellery from Birks, and many international labels. Also not to miss on St. Catherine St. is the annual Santa Claus Parade. Held November 22nd 2014 at 11 AM, this is one of the best things to do that week! Make sure you dress warm and give yourself about 2 hours to take it all in.

The Underground City

One of Montreal’s great secrets is the network of passageways, transportation hubs, stores and galleries – all located below the streets. Easiest way to find it is through the metro stations or one of the shopping malls like Complex Desjardins. You’ll find lots of places to get out of the weather and do a little shopping as well.

Montreal Bookstores

Maybe you’d like to find some great reads, or some French books to send home for your family to enjoy. You’ll be pleased to know that Montreal is full of great bookstores. A few of the larger ones include Indigo’s, Ulysses (4176 rue St-Denis) and Archambault (500 rue Ste-Catherine East), the latter of which specializes in wonderful children’s books in both English and French.

Old Montreal

Of course, one of the best places to shop is in Old Montreal. You’ll find a mix of everything old and new with local and cultural flavours. Be sure to shop around when downtown, some places are expensive. That being said, the Old City is incredibly charming and has a pleasant and cheery ambiance, especially during the holidays.

Plateau & Mile End

If you’d like to browse a more bohemian range of shops, be sure to check out the boutiques in these two areas. You’ll find true Montreal flavour and funky original finds. These vintage boutiques have everything quirky and appealing. For low to mid range budgets try looking on rue St. Denis, north of Sherbrooke, and Boulevard St. Laurent. If you’re after more Parisian, high-end items, head to Avenue Laurier (between Ave. de l’Epée and St-Laurent).
